Chaweon Koo was kind enough to send me a copy of her new book Spell Bound. I read it cover to cover over the last 22 hours and I am happy to report it earns a place on my “Awesome, must keep forever” shelf.
구자연 작가님이 친절하게도 새 책 '스펠 바운드'를 보내주셨어요. 지난 22시간 동안 책장을 넘기며 읽었는데, 제 책꽂이에 '영원히 간직해야 할 책'으로 선정되어 기쁘게 생각합니다.
Let’s start with the obvious thing that everyone is already saying: It’s a gorgeous book. Very nice hardcover packed with full color illustrations by Kring Demetrio. These illustrations make reading the book a joy that is hard to put into words, and contribute to the overall Korean feel that Chaweon brings to the book, as well as other Asian influences she mentions throughout.
모두가 이미 말하고 있는 당연한 말부터 시작하겠습니다: 멋진 책입니다. 크링 데메트리오의 풀 컬러 삽화로 가득 찬 아주 멋진 양장본입니다. 이 삽화들은 책을 읽는 즐거움을 말로 표현하기 어렵게 만들며, 차연이 책 전반에 걸쳐 언급하는 다른 아시아적 영향뿐만 아니라 한국적인 느낌을 더하는 데 기여합니다.
A potential reader might ask: is this a book about Asian Magic? The answer is both yes and no.
이 책이 아시아 마술에 관한 책이냐고 묻는 독자가 있을 수 있습니다. 대답은 '그렇다'와 '아니다'입니다.
The author is Korean and the Illustrator is from the Philippines, so its magic taught and transmitted through an Asian lens. It’s definitely not a book about exclusively Korean or Asian magical traditions. It mentions these traditions and gives wonderful insight, but Chaweon also talks about Jove, and Hekate, and Servitors, and all sorts of other esoterica. The book is reflective of modern magic in Asia today: rooted in traditions and cultural perspective, while eagerly embracing international occultism and bleeding edge technology.
저자는 한국인이고 일러스트레이터는 필리핀 출신이기 때문에 아시아적 시각으로 마술을 가르치고 전수하는 책입니다. 한국이나 아시아의 마술 전통만을 다룬 책은 절대 아닙니다. 이 책은 이러한 전통을 언급하고 훌륭한 통찰력을 제공하지만, 차원은 조브, 헤카테, 서바이터 및 기타 모든 종류의 밀교에 대해서도 이야기합니다. 이 책은 전통과 문화적 관점에 뿌리를 두고 있으면서도 국제적인 오컬티즘과 최첨단 기술을 적극적으로 수용하는 오늘날 아시아의 현대 마술을 반영하고 있습니다.
As Chaweon leads us through important practices and philosophies, she tells the story of her own journey in magic, and introduces us to modern practitioners from diverse backgrounds. Lama Tsultrim Allione, Dr Aaron Davis, Aidan Watcher, Camelia Elias, Andrieh Vitimus, Charli Cohen, Jack Grayle and a whole host of others. And yes, I get to add my two cents about offerings and traditions in the book.

Experiences practitioners will find a new and different perspective on familiar concepts as well as a very smart analysis on how things like the metaverse, NFT’s, chatbots, and gravatar’s are going to impact Witchcraft in the future. Chaweon and I often disagree with whether these new technologies are good or not, but there is no denying that they are happening, so having a positive and useful take on them is important.
주술사들은 익숙한 개념에 대한 새롭고 다른 관점을 발견할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 메타버스, NFT, 챗봇, 그라바타와 같은 것들이 앞으로 주술에 어떤 영향을 미칠지에 대한 매우 현명한 분석도 얻을 수 있습니다. 차원과 저는 이러한 신기술이 좋은지 아닌지에 대해 의견이 다를 때가 많지만, 새로운 기술이 등장하고 있다는 사실은 부인할 수 없으므로 긍정적이고 유용한 관점을 갖는 것이 중요합니다.
I cannot recommend this book strong enough. Go grab a copy as soon as you can!
