ERESHKIGAL is the Mesopotamian Queen of the Dead. She is the ruler the underworld, in which seven guarded gates stand between the worlds of the living and the dead. She ensures the souls of the dead do not escape the confines of the underworld and that no living soul enters this realm, as to do so, could compromise the concealment of the closely guarded secrets of the afterlife. Ereshkigal is one of the most ancient goddesses of Mesopotamia, a historical region of Western Asia situated within the Tigris-Euphrates river system, in the northern part of the Fertile Crescent. Today, Mesopotamia occupies modern Iraq.

The name Ereshkigal translates to "Great Lady of the Earth." Ereshkigal was the sole ruler of the underworld, until she came to share power with Nergal, the God ofWar, who became her husband. She is sometimes known as Irkalla, which is also the name of the underworld itself. The word "great" may apply to the vastness of her realm, the land of the dead, also known as Kurnugia "the Land of No Return." Kurnugia is vast land of darkness under the earth, where the souls of the dead drink from muddy puddles and eat dust. Ereshkigal rules over these souls from her palace Ganzir, located at the entrance to the underworld, and protected by the seven guarded gates.

Ereshkigal is the older sister of the goddess Inanna, the Sumerian goddess oflove, sensuality, fertility and procreation. Ereshkigal and Inanna are representations of darkness and light, goddesses of hell and heaven or the underworld and upperworld, respectively. In the well-known Sumerian poem The Descentoflnanna (c. 1900-1600 BCE), Inanna descends into the underworld. Her reasons for attempting to enter the underworld are unclear but she tells Ereshkigal 's gatekeepers that she is there to attend the funeral of Ereshkigal's first husband Gugalanna who has been killed. When she arrives, she meets Neti, the gatekeeper of the underworld and demands to be allowed in. Neti informs Ereshkigal that Inanna has demanded aggressively to be allowed through the gates. Ereshkigal orders Neti to bolt the seven gates of the underworld but to allow Inanna into the palace Ganzir. She then allows Inanna to enter through each of the seven gates, but each time Inanna is ordered to remove an article of clothing.

Finally, once she has gone through all seven gates, she finds herself naked and powerless, standing before the throne of Ereshkigal, yet she demands Ereshkigal to leave her throne, and sits upon it in her place. The seven judges of the underworld judge Inanna and declare her to be guilty. Inanna is struck dead, and her corpse is hung on a hook in the underworld for everyone to see.

Inanna's minister, Ninshubur, however, pleads with various gods to spare Inanna and finally Enki agrees to rescue Inanna from the underworld. Enki sends two sexless beings down to the underworld to bring Inanna back to life with the food and water of life. These beings escort Inanna up from the underworld, but a horde of angry demons follow Inanna, demanding to take someone else down to the underworld as a replacement. They initially want it to be Ninshubur, but Inanna refuses to sacrifice her loyal aide to them. When she returns from the underworld and discovers that her husband, Dumuzid, has not mourned her death, she becomes enraged towards him and orders the demons to take him as her replacement.

The story ofEreshkigal and Nergal is thought to be a later legend than that of the decent oflnanna to the underworld. It was told in the context of Babylonian culture, which is considered to be more male dominated. Historians of religious studies see it as part of the general trend in Mesopotamian religion, that goddesses came to be replaced or dominated by their male counterparts.

In Babylonian history Ereshkigal holds high-ranking status among the underworld deities, ruling over the category of "transtigridian snake gods" such as Ninazu, Tishpak, Ishtaran and the Elamite god Inshushinak. In Mesopotamia, these gods were known almost exclusively in the context of the afterlife. Nergal who fulfilled equivalent functions in the north in Sumerian times held power over a host of minor war gods and disease demons. It is thought that the idea of Nergal and Ereshkigal as a couple likely developed out of a need to reconcile the two traditions.

In the poem, Ereshkigal gives up her sole rulership of the underworld for the sake of her passionate love for Nergal. The story begins in the context of the separation between the gods of Heaven or the upper worlds and the underworld. The gods of Heaven Anu, Enlil, and Ea, to whom Ereshkigal is closely related, host a banquet to which Ereshkigal is invited, but cannot leave the underworld to attend. Instead, she is invited to send her servant on her behalf to receive her portion of their divine banquet in the heavens.

Ereshkigal sends her faithful minister Namtar, who climbs "the long stairway to heaven" and is respectfully received by all except Nergal, the god of war and diseases, who refuses to stand in his presence. Nergal is commanded by the gods to make amends for his insulting behavior personally, by descending into the underworld to apologize to Ereshkigal. Ea assists Nergal by providing him with seven demons to protect him. Ea also warns Nergal not to accept the hospitality he will be offered as Ereshkigal's guest, especially, "not to do with her that which men and women do."

Nergal does not heed this advice and after the goddess allows him to see her undress for her bath, he gives in to his desire. After six days of passionate lovemaking, Nergal leaves Ereshkigal asleep and makes his way back to the heavens. Awakening to find herself abandoned, the goddess is heartbroken and angry. Namtar is then sent to bring Nergal back, but Ea disguises Nergal as a lesser god and Namtar is fooled. Ereshkigal ultimately realizes the deception and demands Nergal to return, threatening to open the gates of the underworld and allow the spirits of the dead to swarm the world of the living if her demands are ignored. The gods agree to hand Nergal over to her again.

In the same version of the legend in which Ereshkigal planned to kill Nergal, when he gets to the throne he knocks over Namtar and drags Ereshkigal to the floor. He is about to kill her with his axe when she pleads for her life; she promises to be his wife and to share her power with him. He consents, however, Nergal must still leave the underworld for six months, so Ereshkigal gives him back his demons and allows him to return to the upper world for that time, after which he returns to her. Nergal ends up becoming a king of the underworld, ruling alongside Ereshkigal.

Ereshkigal is a formidable goddess of great power but is often depicted as one who forgives an injustice or a wrong in the interests of the greater good. In this role, she encourages virtue in those who should follow her example. Ereshkigal, as with all the deities of Mesopotamia, maintained order and defied the forces of chaos. Those souls who had left the world of the living were not supposed to return, and Ereshkigal made certain they remained where they belonged. If a ghost should come back to haunt the living, one could be sure it was for a good reason and with Ereshkigal 's permission. In Sumerian culture the main reasons for a haunting were improper burial of the dead or wicked acts which had gone unpunished. As queen of the underworld and ruler of the souls of the dead, Ereshkigal stood as a potent reminder to the living to observe the proper rites and rituals of the dead and to treat others with decency.

There is no definitive iconography for Ereshkigal, although it is thought that the Babylonian Queen of the Dead is either a representation of Ereshkigal or Ishtar (Inanna).

To connect with Ereshkigal in her necromantic aspect, you will need several things. First of all, prepare two candles: one white, one black. This is to represent her dominion over the powers oflife and death. You will also need a dagger or another ritual blade, a tool to draw blood (lancet or razor), some incense (cypress, juniper, or tamarisk), and a chalice filled with sacrament. The sacrament should be wine, mead, or another drink of rich taste, not necessarily alcoholic. The souls of the dead in the land of Ereshkigal were believed to have nothing to eat and drink, except for dry dust. The Sumerian underworld was thought to be a dark and gloomy place, with no life and no enjoyment. Therefore, by providing offerings to the goddess, you immediately draw her attention. In this ritual we will use a sacrament that will be partially consumed by you, and partially poured onto the ground, where the death energy is strong. This can be a cemetery, as well as a place where people died, either in an accident or by their own hand. The ritual itself does not need to be performed at a cemetery.

Another thing needed to connect with the goddess is a green flame. In rites of magic, she often appears with two green flames in her handsthe flames of necromancy, which is the energy that nourishes the dead in the land of no return. The easiest way to provide such a flame is to simply obtain a green candle. This, however, does not give the same result as using an actual green flame. There are several ways to produce a flame like that. First of all, you need a burner, where you can create fire. It does not have to be big-you can even have a mini burner that you can place on your altar. To make green fire, you will need either borax/boric acid or copper sulfate. Borax or boric acid needs to be mixed with methanol, which is a type of alcohol. Then you can ignite the solution. If you can obtain copper sulfate solution, it can be used on wood logs, pinecones, or charcoal. Soak them in the liquid and let them dry, then ignite. You can also sprinkle solid copper sulfate onto a fire to make the flame green. You will need to scry into the flame, so it is recommended to experiment with both types before the ritual to see what works better for your needs and to prepare enough of the substance to last for as long as you might need for the meditation.

When all is prepared, start by leaving the offerings for the goddess. In ancient times, people would pour libations into the graves of the deceased to nourish them. You can do the same and pour some of the drink that you will use as a sacrament onto the ground in the chosen place of death. At the same time speak a prayer to Ereshkigal to draw her attention. It can be the following one or your own:

Visualize a dark light shining in your chest, spreading over the whole body and transforming your senses. Then gaze into it, using it in exactly the same way as any other scrying medium. Focus on receiving the vision of the goddess on her throne in her dark palace. If the intent of the ritual is only to connect with her, open yourself to whatever visions she may choose to show you. If you also want to see visions of the underworld or other souls that dwell in the nether regions, ask her to guide you through this visual journey. Keep your mind open, and when the journey is over, extinguish the flame and thank the goddess for her presence. Then close the ritual.

To invoke Ereshkigal is to dare to transcend the worlds of the living and the dead. It is to pass through the seven gates of the underworld. You will descend a staircase from your world to the gates at the edge of Kurnugia. The invocation should be performed in a place of darkness, lit by two candles, one white and one black, representing the polarity of the upper and under worlds, life and death, Inanna and Ereshkigal.

You may wish to perform this ritual outdoors in nature or at your indoor altar, ideally under the dark moon, representing the death of the last moon cycle and the awaited arrival of the new moon. You should have the sigil ofEreshkigal either printed or hand drawn on parchment paper and charge this with a drop of your blood. You may wish to offer sweet smelling incense such as cinnamon and offerings of fresh fruit, meats and a glass of fresh water or wine. This contrasts with the bitter atmosphere of the underworld, where Ereshkigal weeps for the lost souls who eat dust and drink from muddy puddles.

Place the sigil between two candles, the black candle on the left and the white on the right. Light your candles and incense and sit or stand comfortably. Focus on your breathing, taking deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth, as you gaze at the sigil. Do this until you feel fully relaxed and immersed in the atmosphere of your ritual.

When you reach the top, you take a deep breath in, and as you exhale you are thankful for the world of richness and life that surrounds you. You give thanks to Ereshkigal for her guidance.

This working is based on the Sumerian myth of Inanna' s descent into the underworld. In the myth, the queen of heavens sets on a journey to the nether regions to visit her sister and to attend the funeral rites of Gugalanna, Ereshkigal 's husband. Like Inanna, you will pass through the seven gates to the underworld, leaving a part of your mundane self at each gate, to finally unite with the goddess of death in the heart of her realm. The journey may be preceded by meditating on the sigil of the goddess and placing some offerings for her on your altar.

Also, before you start the journey, assume the coffin position, i.e., lie down with your back straight and your arms crossed on your chest. You can only enter the underworld naked, stripped of all protections and mundane attachments. Therefore, the best way to do it is to perform this practice naked, with no clothes or jewelry. Another option is to wrap yourself in a piece of material that will serve as a "burial shroud." In the Sumerian underworld, all souls are equal-they are all dressed the same way, eat the same food, and suffer the same dreary condition-peasants and kings, men and women, mortals and gods. Before entering, they are all stripped of all their mundane possessions, because these are "the rites of the underworld."

When all is prepared, lie down, close your eyes, and let the whole world around you dissolve in darkness. Then visualize that you are standing on top of stairs leading down, into the underworld. You can imagine it as a stone construction, like a dungeon, or in another way that appeals to you. Start descending the stairs. This journey will have seven stages.

This can be your name, your talents, your family, your home, etc. Choose accordingly, and when you do that, descend to the next gate. The gatekeeper will wait for you there as well. When you finally arrive at Ereshkigal's kingdom, visualize her sitting on the throne, waiting for you. She is beautiful and creepy at the same time. She wears a long dress that is stained with the blood of sacrifices, her hair is black and long, and she is holding two green flames in her hands. Greet her with respect, remembering that you are facing the queen of the underworld. To commune with her, you need to become a part of the underworld yourself. This in ancient myths is usually described as eating the food of the underworld, bathing in the river that flows there, or having sexual contacts with its dwellers. For instance, the god Nergal is warned before he arrives at the underworld "not to sit, eat, drink or wash while in the underworld, as well as not to have sex with Ereshkigal." Visualize whichever of these actions appeals to you and let your consciousness merge with that of the goddess. Then let the vision flow freely and open yourself for whatever the queen of the underworld chooses to show you. When you feel ready to end the working, visualize that you ascend back, collecting the powers you left at the seven gates (if you still want them). Then take a few deep breaths, stand up, and close the ritual.

Inanna' s initiation into the mysteries of the underworld took three days and three nights. During this time, she was hanging on a hook, bleeding out for her dark sister. Only then, purified and transformed through the rites of the underworld, was she able to return to the world of the living and proclaim herself "the queen of life and death." It is therefore recommended to perform this meditation on three consecutive days, observing carefully how this process affects your thoughts, emotions and dreams, as well as the reception of gnosis and inner insights.
