How to Tie the Infinity Knot

These instructions and illustrations are based on those given by Jessica Levey for American Marriage Ministries.96 They show the process using a single cord. The process is the same for using multiple cords.

Tying this knot is actually very easy, once you know how. Just practice a couple times and you will be sure to get it right.

1. Obtain your cord(s). They should all be the same width, thickness, and length.

2. The grooms should be facing each other and join hands in between them.

3. Drape the cords over the hands of the grooms, so that the ends hang down of equal distance on both sides.

4. The Priest uses their right hand to firmly take hold of the front cord(s). The Priest will not let go, keeping the knot stationary until the knot is complete.

5. The Priest takes their left hand and grasps the cords in the back, bringing them forward and under the hands.

6. The Priest brings the cord in the back over the top of the front cord, moving from left to right, making the first crossing of the cords.

9. Drape the cord in the back over the back of the hands.

10. The Priest releases both ends of the cords. The knot has been set up. Now we wait for the moment in which the Priest offers a final blessing (or the grooms do in unison) at which time the Priest again grabs both ends of the cords as the grooms slowly and carefully pull away their hands. The Priest then pulls both ends tight, tying the knot.
